Departing from Madrid to Royal Palace San Lorenzo de El Escorial, historic residence of the Spanish monarchs and royal monastery, 28 miles (45 kilometers) northwest of Madrid. To visit the symbol of Spanish power of the 16th century built by King Philip II to house the remains of his parents, Charles I and Isabella of Portugal, with its important religious relics, highly decorated altar and the baroque dome inspired by St. Peter Rome. El Escorial also known as the Pantheon of the Kings, where the marble tomb of Carlos V is the first King's Hall of Arms of Spain. Take a look of the ornate arms, and admire the frescoes in the decorated library.
Your tour continues to the El Escorial Valley of the Fallen, 6 miles (9.5 kilometers) to the north. Admire the great basilica built into the side of a mountain, topped by a giant granite cross 150 meters (500 feet) high rises and dominates the landscape. The monument was built by the spanish dictator General Franco to commemorate the dead of the Civil War in Spain. Take a guided tour through the interior of the modern basilica austerely, with its vaulted crypt carved angels, then look out of the esplanade surrounding arches to admire the spectacular valley landscape surrounding the resort.
